ARCHITECT: Charlie Barnett and Associates
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: Michael Bliss

This modern farmhouse, guest house, and barn sit atop a sprawling parcel with breathtaking mountain and canyon views. Having worked with us on a previous home in 2011, the clients wanted to incorporate some of those cherished design elements into their new Monterey Bay retreat. Steel-framed windows and doors ensure every room is filled with natural light and unobstructed views of the surrounding alder, redwood, and oak trees. Vaulted ceilings, cedar trusses, and a 20-foot masonry fireplace align seamlessly with the natural landscape, while durable materials—cedar siding, corten steel roofing, and board-formed concrete—offer low-maintenance longevity. The property’s rugged terrain presented logistical challenges in integrating propane, generators, and solar, but the result is a system that enables off-grid operation and frees the home from PG&E concerns.
